One common mistake made by most field landmen is not taking the time to format their reports properly and make every effort to find current addresses, lost heirs and phone numbers.

Mineral owners do not pay property taxes on their mineral rights. Consequently, their current address and phone numbers are not readily available in the records of the County Assessor. The field landman is therefore required to be more diligent and creative when attempting to locate these owners.

About Our Courses

Few professions require more diversity of knowledge and skills because no well is ever drilled and no wind tower or cellular tower or pipeline is ever constructed without the services of a landman. The importance of the landman’s role cannot be overemphasized.  Over the course of the past 17 years, the Petroleum Landman School and the Institute of Energy Management has worked very hard to design comprehensive courses and different teaching platforms with principles and practical usage applicable throughout the United States to help our students meet this needed knowledge and skills.  All our courses have been written from the professional experience of those who managed multi-state independent land companies, worked as senior oil and gas attorneys, senior right-of-way agents who have even run their own survey and staffing companies, and senior “in-house” landmen dealing with very complex land issues related to drilling projects and acquisitions in projects across the United States.

The Institute of Energy Management's students have stated that our courses provide the most comprehensive interactive learning environment available anywhere.  These courses cover subjects such as mineral and surface title research, well status reports, regulatory issues and requirements, creating accurate reports, understanding the many critical clauses of the oil and gas lease, easements/ right-of-ways including how to create a route selection map, how to calculate oil and gas working interest and net revenue calculations, held-by-production issues, working with surface damage issues, title curative issues and drilling order title opinions, due diligence, production sharing agreements, the joint operating agreement, alternative energy land practices, and much more, including many hands-on workshops.

Take our self-paced online courses (with a recorded instructor) wherever and whenever is convenient for you. With online testing and the option to attend our in-person classes at no extra cost, this provides the best options for you.

We offer in-person classroom training, live Zoom meetings, and live Zoom nighttime classes with the most knowledgeable and seasoned industry veteran instructors.

Our related workshops are designed to provide you real-world hands-on training and offer you the skills and confidence you need to succeed from day one.

Students have 6 months to get through each self-paced course, after which access to the course will expire.  If you wish to re-enroll in a course after access has expired, we can offer a 25% re-enrollment discount for each course.

Unique to the Institute of Energy Management:

After taking the self-paced online course, if you wish to attend a live class of the same course, you can attend one such live class or live Zoom class once without additional tuition fees within the time frame stated above.

The opposite is available in that if you attend a live class or live Zoom class, you will have 6 months to take the self-paced online version of the same course at no additional costs.  This allows a great review and retention exercise for you.

Whether you choose to take a course online or in a classroom, the material offered is the same.  The availability of both provides you with the extra needed time to better absorb the material being discussed.

SPECIAL NOTE: All requests, such as replacement manuals or completion certificates, must be submitted to the school via email at: [email protected]

All requests and inquiries are very important, and the school will respond as time allows.  Please note that our administrators are instructors and working landmen and responses to inquiries and requests may take longer than expected. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
